This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending a panel discussion, including farmers and sustainable farm advocates, Nina Planck, author of Real Food, What to Eat and Why, and Rene Catacalos, Editor of Edible Chesapeake magazine.
Nina is the daughter of the owner of Wheatland Acres, a Loundoun County vegetable farmer. She has become a leading advocate for real foods from local farmers. Nina has herself, started farmers markets in London and NYC–around 17 markets in fact!
I nominate Nina (pronounced Knee-Na) as a Hero of Sustainable Agriculture!
She has also recently bought her own farm in New Jersey. She lives in the heart of urban America, the Big Apple, but is moving toward the farm life!
This event was sponsored by Smartmarkets.org, a local group here in Northern Virginia that runs farmers markets.
