Wild Frontier, Wears Valley, TN

Down below our mountain cabins is Wears Valley, an idyllic, old farming community which oozes country charm. The people in Tennessee are wonderful folk, they either were born and raised here, or moved here from elsewhere, because they simply love the area. Their enthusiasm is contagious, which may be why people have been coming here to ‘get away from it all’ for their whole life.  When you visit this area, you are treated as though you are coming home. You are made to feel so welcome, you definitely can’t wait to return.

This is an important wedding destination, too. Many honeymooners also come to the area, so naturally, many anniversaries are celebrated by returning to the mountains.

We took this beautiful photo of cattle grazing in a field, on our way down to Wears Valley to go shopping. I love the meandering stream, and the cows certainly look contented, don’t they?

One of my favorite shops in Wears Valley, is Antiques of  Wears Valley run by Donna and Nell . We bought many wonderful home decor items there for our cabins, such as barnwood framed bathroom mirrors and rocking chairs. Not everything they sell is antique, some of it is bric a brac, and they are a bonafide gift shop, as well. The owner also made the wonderful flower arrangements that adorn our dining tables in Breathless and Awestruck cabins. This trip, I found a cool Fresh Milk Sign. It was not an antique, but a replica. It is now hanging in the kitchen at Breathless.

Country Creek Furniture has figured out a great way to attract business to its cabin furniture store.  They put a life size stuffed black bear outside in the parking lot.  Here I am with the most lifelike stuffed animal I have ever seen!

Wears Valley architecture usually tries to take you back in time to the days of the Wild Frontier.  Here is the general store, which has wide plank hardwood floors inside, and lots of neat souvenirs, sundries and staples, even Amish butter!

The Quaint and Colorful Wears Valley General Store

An enterprising farmer, Alvin McGill, with the help of his sons, has recently set up a petting zoo and mini-pony ride attraction in the valley. This would be perfect for small children, and really gives the kids a taste of farm living. We enjoyed feeding his goats, and petting them. As you can see, a trip to the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee will create indelible memories for your children. This is a very special place, one that allows you to go back in time, and live like our forbears, if only for a time.
