Another blogger has come across an incredible bit of news, a factory pig farm that produces nearly a million pigs per year is the likely source of the swine flu outbreak in Mexico, that is now infecting U.S. citizens in Texas and California.
As if we didn’t have enough urgency to return to small scale, mixed use farms! Health officials claim this flu outbreak has the potential to turn into a pandemic. Check out the details on the Peak Oil Entrepreneur blog.

Just the picture breaks my heart! How horrendous that place must be to produce nearly a million pigs a year. Awful.
Oh wow. I just posted about this story, too, but my source was Grist’s Tom Philpott (who took his cue from the Peak Oil Entreprenuer blog). Looks like it’s starting to make its rounds through the blogosphere.
That’s great. Sometimes we spread news faster than the news media (at least on issues that are important to us).

This is incredibly scary. The more I read, the more concerned I get. Our society pays a heavy price for relying on factory farming practices…we just normally don’t get to see such a blatant result. Even those of us who stay far away from factory farmed meat are at risk this time around (unlike the typical beef recalls). Time to boost the immune system!

A note on the picture: The photo is of a bunch of sleeping pigs and was taken in Vietnam. Certainly, the conditions in Mexico are much worse, the pigs in a factory farm of that size would be in cages stacked on top of each other, they would be unable to turn around, and the animal waste would be raining down on the pigs below.
I only chose this photo because of the brown tint makes it look erie and the pigs appear dead (although, if you look carefully, they look quite healthy). This photo was meant to evoke a mood, not illustrate the facts of the story.
Just saw on the news that the flu has been found in New York and another state. This is really a big worry.
