At our market, we actively and strongly encourage this sort of thing. We want our market shoppers to be aware of the challenges facing small farmers. Much of the time, items like raw milk cheese are sold by "private treaty." Similarly, a few folks slaughter their animals on the farm. Instead of selling the meat, they technically sell the live animal and the shopper gives them permission to butcher it.

Thanks so much John for documenting your plight for our readers. I think it is shocking that this situation could drag on for 5 years. Will someone wake up and end this farmer's woes?

John also told me in a phone conversation, as far as the safety issue, that when you add a culture to raw milk it produces lactic acid--and that pathogens can't survive an acidic environment. Just thought I would pass that along.
