Running with The Raven on Miami Beach

Sun and Sand Fitness in Miami Beach

My brother in-law Paul had a mission on our Christmas trip to Miami. He wanted to run with The Raven! The Raven is a fellow who for the last 35 years, has run on the beach daily. Through rain and hurricane he has kept his resolution to run daily. The Raven has run over 100,000 miles in 8 mile increments, on sand, which is no mean feat. Paul is an avid runner, and recently learned of The Raven on national TV. So, we dropped off Connie and Paul on South Beach to find The Raven.

Keith and I then parked the car and set out on foot to find them and take photos of their athletic exploits.

Paul was the only runner that day that completed the entire 8 miles. Connie and the local runners each dropped out when they reached their destination or had another appointment.

Paul, who normally runs on dirt trails on our Reston nature trails, did say that running on sand was hard on his knees. But, he is glad he ran the distance and was the 1,017th runner to complete Raven’s grueling beach run, which Raven says is a significant number, as it is his birthday. He also gave Paul the nickname “Waterproof,” which is very apropos.

Paul is a triathlete and often swims and runs in the rain, without flinching.
