Sir Julian Rose Letter to Raw Milk Freedom Fighter Michael Schmidt

Sally Fallon Morell, the President of Weston A. Price Foundation, a nutrition education non-profit, heads to London in March, and will share the stage at her first European Wise Traditions Conference with Sir Julian Rose, a leading advocate for raw dairy in his country.

In 1975, Sir Julian began converting Hardwick, his family estate, to organic farming methods, making him one of the pioneers of the ecological approach to farming. He is a former board member (1984-2000) of The Soil Association. Sir Julian successfully campaigned to protect raw milk sales in Britain during 1987 and 1997.

Sir Julian whipped out an eloquent opinion editorial on the eve of Michael Schmidt’s verdict, which ran as an exclusive on the Globe and Mail newspaper website. Here is an excerpt:

Congratulations to Michael Schmidt – the Ontario farmer who’s due in a Newmarket court today for the verdict on charges he violated the provincial Milk Act by selling unpasteurized milk – for standing up to the anti-raw-milk lobbyists. I am very aware of what he and his supporters are up against, having founded the Association for Unpasteurised Milk Producers and Consumers in the United Kingdom back in 1989 to prevent the British government’s proposed ban of unpasteurized milk – and again in 1997. We won our battle on both occasions, maybe because of the “and Consumers” factor and much press support.

I ran a doorstep delivery service of our own Guernsey organic raw milk and cream, and this inspired me to write a leaflet with a tear-off strip briefly proclaiming the positive case for raw milk. The purchasers then signed the statement and sent the slip back to AUMPC. This was reproduced amongst 150 raw milk producers and their customers. We collected 15,000 signatures and delivered them personally to the Minister of Agriculture.

See the rest of his commentary, on the Globe and Mail website, one of Canada’s largest newspapers, which reaches 1.25 million readers daily.

  1. We have a lot to celebrate this week, the victory of Michael Schmid, the dedication of Sir Julian as a great hero supporting the right of the people to chose raw milk, and Kim Hartke, who keeps us up to date and motivated.

  2. Hi Kim. Great to see Julian keeping the iron hot. This time, its not a war between North Americans and Brits; its all of us now, united against the corporate government partnership, aka, the food fascists, who want to dictate to us what we eat, like, we can eat anything we want, so long as they produce it, but if we all just stand up and say no, then they have no power, because all the power they have is stolen from us.
