Right on, Allan. Tomorrow evening I'm teaching a class called "Gardening for Maximum Nutrition" to help people learn how to get high brix produce from their garden.

After reading about the brix testing....I am reminded just how far away from common sense we've come. Good soil = excellent food= healthy people = better quality of life.

I like the healthy skepticism that your article brings to the high Brix discussion. I was curious to know if Brix could give a general measure of nutrient content beyond sugars. The engineer in me devised a simple test. I stirred some crystalline vitamin C into a glass of water. Sure enough, the Brix measurement raised from 0 for plain water to 3 for water with the vitamin C added. From apple to apple and orange to orange, I'll go for the higher Brix option.

Thanks, Kelly M. for sharing your experience with Brix Testing with my readers! Let's hope more farmers and ranchers implement this on their farms as a result of your endorsement. That would be good for our health!

I should also mention that I am an Organic Valley Dairy farmer and we Brix test our grasses and our milk at different times of the year. Healthy, biologically active, well mineralized soils on organic farms are key to animal health and therefore human health.

I LOVE THIS STUFF!! It just makes sense that if you treat the soil right, the food grown there will treat us right too - whether it's in how good it tastes or the nutrition it supplies to our bodies. We're already starting to think about our garden and can't wait to check out Astera's blog more. The blog tagline draws you in right away, "I won't rest until farming is cooler than rock 'n roll"!!
