What Kinda Junk is Modern Man Eating?
by Kimberly Hartke
A video artist is outraged by the insidious way commodity crops like sugar beets, corn and soy have taken over our food supply, and snuck into almost everything we eat. This is her smart way of educating others about the issue. This artsy film is thought provoking, and I hope millions will see it!
Here is the video!

Commodity Crops for Dummies
1) Commodity Crops are Making us Fat
2) Commodity Crops are Robbing our Health
3) Commodity Crops are Polluters
4) Commodity Crops have Given Rise to Dangerous GMO’s
5) Commodity Crops are Costing Taxpayers Tons of Money
I don’t have time this morning to flesh out these points, but hope some of my super smart readers will add the details in the comments, below.
Here is an interview with the video creator: Commodity Cropism: The Data You Don’t Have About your Food
This video currently has 205 views. Let’s see how far we can make it spread!

I have always loved Beethoven’s Pastorale Symphony – now I’m going to chuckle and imagine processed foods popping from edamame every time I hear it! Corn strip tease to Marvin Gaye only to reveal more processed food…brilliant – I think there needs to be one more segment to this film. A listing of facts about GMO dangers, how about Johnny Rivers’ Secret Agent Man?
I am a follower by email but when I saw your link at Real Food Wednesdays, I jumped right over. It is shocking how industrial our basc need to eat has become. It is also very frustrating to get away from it as there are so many legal barriers preventing food producers from connecting with consumers. You are doing great work!
Thanks, Dyno-Mom. Let’s see how many moms you can share this with!
Love the video! I was surprised by some of the corn aliases. It’s very hard to keep up with all the sneakiness and trickery, which is why it’s just smartest to eat simply. Eat fresh, eat organic, eat local. I’ll be passing this along on FB. Thanks for all you do. Oh, and I like the idea from Lee (below) on the Secret Agent Man song. LOL
Clever video – I’m picturing mounds of sugar cubes at the moment. 🙂
Commodity crops are damaging to both our health and the future of our earth. If we don’t vote with our dollars and activism, who will?
Off topic question here! 😉
I’ve been reading a few minimalist blogs lately who state that eating less or no meat is the best way to reduce pollution. How can that be refuted?
This is really not as off topic as you might think! Conventional produce
farming in America is usually done on a large scale, and it involves
killing a lot of animals and animal habitat, lots of chemicals and
pesticides. A farmer recently told me that people who make this argument
know little about ecology!
In fact this same farmer wrote this article that gives a great defense
of livestock ranching and meat eating, and makes a strong case of how we
can restore our land with grazing animals:

Feel free to send this link to those minimalist bloggers. It might get
them thinking!
Thank you Kimberly. Being a goat keeper, this is a subject near and dear to my heart. 🙂 I have a small-scale farming book that discuses the ecology of farming a little bit, but not much. I’ve read the article that you recommended a while ago, but what I remember of it, I was quite impressed.
Does anyone know where this “become vegan, save the planet” shtick came from? Where I come from (Alaska) eating meat is much more “green” then eating beans.
