Green Thumb Gardener Starts a Free Garden Classifieds Website

Free Classifieds for Gardeners

Maureen Farmer is a master gardener who came up with a new backyard bounty sharing website. The Farmer’s Garden (www.thefarmersgarden.com) is an easy to use website, where registered users can place ads. These free garden classifieds help you to share or find plants, seedlings, seeds, excess produce and gardening related items.

Maureen took her master gardening classes through the extension service in her home state of Connecticut. She began flower gardening 10 years ago, and now after 6 years of vegetable gardening grows a staggering 80-90% of her own vegetables. She grows summer vegetables and storage crops (things like potatoes, leeks, winter squash that store for an extended period of time).

Her idea for the backyard bounty sharing site came from the experience of giving away her excess to friends and co-workers. “It makes people happy, when you give them a bag of lettuce,” she explains.

A computer programmer by trade, Maureen wanted to learn a new programming language, PHP. She realized that the best way to practice what she was learning was by doing a project. She chose to build The Farmer’s Garden website to hone her PHP skills.

Today, over 500-600 registered users have placed 200 ads on her site. It is designed to filter ads within a 25 or 100 mile radius of where you live, using your zip code. Users will only see ads from other people that are geographically nearby, which saves time and gas.

Users have the option of choosing to be contacted by email or by phone. Emails are hidden on the site to prevent spammers from grabbing email addresses. Traders can arrange to meet at a public place to do their “transactions.” You can offer items for sale, offer to barter, or place free giveaways on the easy to fill out internet form.

The Farmer’s Garden website can be used by home gardeners with surplus backyard produce, people without gardens can run food wanted ads, even local food pantries can run ads for items they are looking to source.

Her biggest challenge is getting people to know about the site and use it. We need to help her spread the word, so please tell your local garden clubs and extension service about this “Maureen’s List” for home gardeners. I registered and placed my first ad today (would love to find some herb plants to grow indoors this winter), so please join me in doing so.
