Health Minded Consumers Must Demand Truth in Labeling
by Kimberly Hartke
Here is a video action alert about Ohio’s move to ban “rbGH free” labels on milk. This move will cause national brands to remove informative labels, and deny consumers, no matter what state they live in the right to choose. Please take time today to voice your protest. And, by all means share this post! Let’s call and fax till the cows come home!
Does this make you sick? Please Contact the Ohio Governor to Voice Your Concern:
Governor Ted Strickland
Ohio Governors Office
Riffe Center, 30th Floor
77 S. High Street
Columbus, Ohio 43215-6108
Or call 614-466-3555
Send Letter by Fax 614-466-9354
Here’s the Letter I’m Sending:
Dear Governor Strickland:
I am writing in protest of your attempts to restrict the free speech rights of dairy producers. As a consumer, I like to be educated about the production practices of the vendors I buy from. When Ohio forbids the labeling of milk as Hormone Free or rbGH Free, you are contributing to the problem of industrial abuses of our livestock and our milk products, not just in your state, but across America.
Health conscious consumers demand the right to choose a hormone free product. America is a free country, and to remain so, manufacturers need to be able to educate the consumer and tell the truth about their production methods.
Please reconsider your move to muzzle ethical manufacturers from selling the benefits of their product. Pushing consumers into the dark is undemocratic, and a bad policy, for our health, and for the future of agriculture.
Governor, please read this article Milk: It Does a Body Good? which states that cows treated with rbGH are 79% more likely to suffer from mastitis.
Or this article, How to Avoid Genetically Modified Food, which mentions reproductive problems and infant mortality rates skyrocketing in test animals fed GMOs.
Please reconsider this dangerous path you are on. I honestly believe if you do further research, you would not want to keep your citizens, and citizens of our great nation in the dark about the food that they consume.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Hartke

Great post, Kimberly!
How can this elected official possibly justify use the law to deny important information to consumers? Are the profits of the manufacturer more important than the public’s right to know?
Does not this governor know that many countries ban the use of that additive?
How can we possibly have the freedom to choose our own food if the law forbids us from knowing what is in it?
I hope this issue is brought before the voters in the next election.

On WAPF Face book page, someone said they called and the Gov knows nothing about this…
“Carole Gurges Hildebrandt – Is this a recent video by Jeffery? I sent my letter via email to the Gov., then, with Jeffery’s prodding, I called the Governor’s office. They know nothing about this issue. In fact it was, “Is this going around the internet again?” and a direction to check his website. With her on the phone, didn’t find anything on his site with a quick look. Was told to call OH Dept. of Agr. Went through 4 different people (and one loud going away party!) to the dairy dept. Left a message for Roger as he was at lunch. I’ll let you know what I hear back.”
I just called Gov. Strickland’s office and told the aide of my objections – he said that was two years ago. I wish the video above had a date on it, and we had up to date info on this issue. I have also written a letter to mail to the gov. but I’m holding off a bit for details on what is happening now. The http://www.yourmilkondrugs.com site doesn’t seem to have dated details either.

The video is dated April 22, 2010. I have a call in to both Jeffrey and Gary who appear in the video to see what gives. Will post it on the blog when I know!
Important story, Kimberly, thanks for highlighting it!
Yes, the order came from Gov. Strickland over two years ago. Last year around this time, the Organic Trade Association bring a legal challenge that failed in Federal Court (http://www.thedailygreen.com/environmental-news/latest/hormone-free-milk-47040204). I don’t know what additional pressure at this point will change, except that Strickland’s going to be up for re-election.
I never buy national-chain milk anyway – I prefer locally-sourced dairies, so they do put the expanded language on their labels. I’m guessing that the national-brand milks sold in the stores are simply label-free.
Jeffrey Smith, GMO researcher and expert says there is proof that they can cause cancer. Here is a NYT article about a government panel who is finding problems with chemicals in food, and recommends going organic!

If what the commenters say is true, and this Ohio ban is already law, then all the more reason for us to raise this issue as a campaign issue! We will put all politicians, nationwide, on notice that consumers right to know are paramount. We need to know what is in our food, especially what we feed the children!
Let’s tell the governor, this issue will not die!
I noticed there is a method for posting to Twitter, but no way to post to Face Book. Please add the link. Thanks.

Everyone, As to the confusion about whether or not this is a new campaign or an old one, I got a call from Jeffrey Smith. This is indeed a current issue and the campaign actually launches next Tuesday. At that time, he will have more information on his website, http://yourmilkondrugs.com as to what you can do to help.
Thanks to a blog reader, I got this scoop before the launch. Next time, I will contact Jeffrey before posting his videos, though!
