This is a letter I sent to my Ron Paul/Liberty meetup group.
While the centuries old tradition of consuming natural, raw milk may not be on many peoples diets in this group due to limited access to local non-industrial farms, I think this is an important issue that highlights the intrusion of the state in regulating our diet. We need legislation like this to enforce the protection of our right to grow, sell, purchase, or consume raw fruits and vegetables — And to raise, sell, or purchase local livestock and products, and which prohibits the state from intrusion into consumer choice.
The legislation just introduced is HR 1830 the “Unpasteurized Milk Bill”. I urge you to call or e-mail your House representative and instruct them to represent you by co-sponsoring this bill (www.house.gov) or use the easy online petition: http://www.ftcldf.org/petitions/pnum1079.php
This is something worth fighting for because so many other injustices are related to this one.
Here are some statements the FDA has made regarding your freedom to choose your diet, original source here: http://www.farmtoconsumer.org/litigation-FDA-status.htm
“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a new ‘fundamental right’ under substantive due process to produce, obtain, and consume unpasteurized milk lacks any support in law.” [p.17]
“There is no absolute right to consume or feed children any particular food.” [p. 25]
“Plaintiffs’ assertion of a ‘fundamental right to their own bodily and physical health, which includes what foods they do and do not choose to consume for themselves and their families’ is similarly unavailing because plaintiffs do not have a fundamental right to obtain any food they wish.” [p. 26]
“There is no fundamental right to freedom of contract.” [p. 27]

(NaturalNews) No matter what one’s personal position is on the issue of consuming dairy products, the freedom to buy and sell raw milk is a fundamental right afforded to every American under the US Constitution. On May 11, 2011, Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) introduced House Resolution (HR) 1830, the Unpasteurized Milk Bill, which will eliminate the unlawful federal restrictions on the interstate sale and distribution of raw milk and raw milk products.
For far too long, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has vigorously fought against the sale and even transportation of raw milk products across state lines, even when raw milk sales are legal in the products’ state of origin. As many NaturalNews readers already know, the FDA actually spent a great deal of time throughout the past year tyrannizing and raiding raw milk dairy farms, not to mention wasted countless thousands of taxpayer dollars in the process.
“This legislation removes an unconstitutional restraint on farmers who wish to sell or otherwise distribute, and people who wish to consume, unpasteurized milk and milk products,” said Rep. Paul to Speaker of the House John Boehner, concerning his proposal. “Americans have the right to consume [raw milk] products without having the federal government second-guess their judgment about what products best promote health. If there are legitimate concerns about the safety of unpasteurized milk, those concerns should be addressed at the state and local level.”
HR 1830 specifically states that the federal government has no legal right to “prohibit, interfere with, regulate or otherwise restrict the interstate traffic of milk, or a milk product, that is unpasteurized and packaged for direct human consumption.” It adds that any federal agency that violates this provision will be in violation of federal law.
The passage of HR 1830 is a crucial step in defending food freedom because, as referenced in previous articles on the issue, the raw milk issue represents the food freedom movement in general. If the FDA is given free reign to continue outlawing the sale of raw milk in violation of the US Constitution, it will do the exact same thing with herbs, supplements, and any other product that is a threat to its corporate sponsors.
HR 1830 is currently awaiting a hearing in the House Committee on Energy and Commerce. You can contact committee members now to express support for the bill by visiting:

http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/constitution/7558-fda-raw-ron-paul-v-milk-police
“On April 20th, after a year-long undercover sting operation, armed federal agents acting on behalf of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) raided the business of Pennsylvanian Amish farmer Dan Allgyer to prevent him from selling his unpasteurized milk to willing, fully-informed customers in Maryland. Federal agents wasted a whole year and who knows how many of our tax dollars posing as customers in order to catch Allgyer committing the ?crime? of selling his milk. He was not tricking people into buying it, he was not forcing people to purchase it, and there had been no complaints about his product. These were completely voluntary transactions, but ones that our nanny-state federal government did not approve of, and so they shut down his business. The arrogance of the FDA and so many other federal agencies is simply appalling. These types of police state raids on peaceful businessmen, so reminiscent of our tyrannical federal drug war, have no place in a free society.”

Anyone who has read Gerry’s post, should buy The Untold Story of Milk, by Ron Schmid. It explains the history that led up to the demonization of fresh milk, how unpasteurized milk used to be used by physicians as a cure for many chronic diseases, the importance of fresh milk’s enzymes to good health. These and other topics are backed up by over 700 references to research, historical documents, government pronouncements, and other literature in the field.
Thank you, Gerry, for speaking up for our consumer right to choose the food we want to eat.

There is one thing bugging me about this Amish farmer episode. Why is a DC food club not working with a farmer near the beltway?
Pavil, Maryland law is so strict, that you can’t even get a cowshare.
Virginia farms are too far away for folks in DC or MD. Most farms near
the Beltway are now subdivisions. It is a tough situation!
