Fire Wipes Out California Farm–Local Foodies Can Help Them Rebuild
On September 3, Alexis and Eric Koefoed woke up to a raging fire in the pastures of their farm in Vacaville, CA. They lost 1,000 chicks, several structures, and over half their lush pasture. Soul Food’s chickens and eggs are served at many fine Bay Area restaurants, cafes, and bakeries. Their insurance coverage is not going to get them through this, and the food and farming communities here have really rallied to help the farm get back on its feet. The next 10 days represent a final — and very urgent — fundraising push before the two weeks roll around in which the farm will have no income because of the lost birds. Here’s how you can help.
AUCTION: Through Oct. 10, you can bid online on many incredible prizes, from Soul food Farm baby chicks to start your own backyard laying flock, to an Michael Pollan “Omnivore’s Delight” package, dinner in Chez Panisse’s downstairs kitchen, eco-fabulous bone jewelry, skateboarding gear, a pitch lunch with the editor of Chronicle Books cooking division, portrait services, private chef dinners, and much much more. Winners will be announced Oct. 11 at Pizzaiolo event below; you do not have to be present to win.

Be a Hero of Sustainable Agriculture, please help this small farm rebuild by bidding on the auction items! Please note, this picture is not of the acutal fire, I am taking creative liberties here because I do not (at least not yet) have Soul Food Farm pix. But, you get the idea…it was blazing hot and it ruined everything they held dear.–Kimberly
