I “Heart” Fields of Athenry Farm

by Cynthia Z., guest blogger

I wish everyone would take affirmative steps to opt out of the industrial food system.  I know it’s hard to completely withdraw, but driving to a farm once a month or so to fill the freezer is such an easy way to start. I think everyone ought support the local farmers.  We are very lucky – there are several good ones in the Northern Virginia area to choose from.   I have my own favorite and I’d like to recommend it to your blog readers, as another option.

I don’t know how many people are aware of Fields of Athenry Farm located a few miles off route 50 between Gilbert’s corner and Middleburg.  Really close!  The farm is owned and operated by Elaine Boland, a super, dynamic woman who is a member of the Weston A. Price Foundation.   I have been driving up to her farm for over a year now to stock up on top quality lamb, beef, chicken, and seasonal turkey.   I like the way she raises and cares for her animals so I know the food is exceptionally nutritional.  I get lamb hearts, lamb and beef liver, beef roast, steaks lamb sausage, shanks, ground beef, and more.  All individually sold, although you can order in bulk.   She also makes her own fabulous chicken broth from whole chickens.

I love visiting the farm – it is so peaceful and I enjoy watching the sheep graze and the chickens, turkeys, and geese run all over the yard.  Her animals live as nature intended and that’s important to me.   I was up there yesterday and I took some time to just sit in the grass and commune with the chickens and the sheep.   I live in Alexandria and it only takes about 1.5 hours or less, depending on traffic.   I would encourage everyone to visit Elaine’s website and then visit her farm store.
