Maryland Mom Makes Raw Milk Headline News

Liz Reitzig is Indefatigable in her Quest for Food Freedom

Liz Reitzig, a mom in Bowie, Maryland whose children are allergic to conventional milk, is working tirelessly for the legalization of raw milk in her state. Liz is the President of Maryland Independent Consumers and Farmers Association. For the last three years, she has led farmers and consumers on lobbying efforts in Annapolis. In the last month, she took her youngest child to several Town Hall meetings to bring the issue to the attention of Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley. Liz and her never say die attitude now has the attention of the mainstream media. A recent story about her and the raw milk battle in the Baltimore Sun got the attention of two local TV news departments, one in Washington, D.C., the other in Baltimore.

Last night, she was featured on the 5:00pm news on the local ABC affiliate in Washington, D.C. Describing the raw milk movement, as far from mainstream, the news anchors then proceeded to show a sympathetic portrait of the plight of Maryland farmers and the families who would like to support them with their hard earned dollars. Currently, moms like Liz must travel to farms two hours away in Pennsylvania to procure raw milk.  It is legal to sell it from the farm gate in Pennsylvania, where the Amish and Mennonite farmers have kept traditional dairying alive in this modern age.

Next week, WMAR TV News in Baltimore will run a story.  Check my blog next week for a link to that news story.

At the Core this is About Support for Family Farms

I have visited Amish country, and the lush green grass of the pastures there nearly knocked me out. It is easy to see why the nutrients from raw milk from cows on those pastures could supersede the milk from cows confined in factories.  The natural diet of a cow is grass and hay, factory cows are fed anything but. When fed their natural diet, and allowed freedom to roam in the sunshine and green grass, these cows produce a safe, wholesome product.

Traditional Farms Employ Humane Methods

Since getting involved in the raw milk crusade, I have realized that the crux of this whole issue is proper animal husbandry. When we stray from nature, and mistreat the animals, pathogen problems mount, and nutrient deficiency results. We must make a place in our modern food supply for traditional farming methods.  It is the only way to regain the safety of our food supply.

What You Can Do to Help Liz, and Your Local Cow

Consumers hold the key to keeping traditional, humane husbandry alive. Please, be good to your local cow.  Find a local source of farm fresh, unprocessed milk. You can sponsor a cow to live a happy, healthy life on green pastures.  But you must vote with your food dollars by drinking raw milk.

Visit realmilk.com to find a reliable farm producing safe raw milk near you.

Finally, if you know someone in Maryland, send them a link to this story, and request that they call their state representatives in Annapolis, and ask them to support HB 1080, a bill sponsored by Delegate J.B. Jennings, which would re-legalize cow-boarding programs, a right that was taken away from Maryland citizens in 2006 by the Maryland Department of Health and Human Hygiene.

I wonder if there is a ‘religious freedom’ legal position for “untreated food from God”.

I grew up on raw milk, never had any problems. Raw milk is easy to digest because it has all the enzymes the body needs. I live in Wisconsin and it is illegal to sell raw milk here. I wish it was available in all supermarkets. It taste so much better too.
