H1N1 Hijacks Natural Cures Blog Carnival

Ok, now don’t laugh. After all my blogging about natural cures, nourishing foods and immune building strategies, I have come down with the flu. Not totally sure it is H1N1, but my husband thinks so. His research says it is the only flu that has struck our community, so far.

Since I am feeling a little punk, here’s the deal. The blog carnival today is now declared a “Get Me Well” carnival!

Please send all your flu fighting strategies my way, in hopes of helping me and all those other stricken with the flu folks out there! Post them in the comments or submit a past blog post that you think might be helpful!

Oh, and by the way, this will make you laugh.  I was doing a publicity project about the H1N1 virus for an ad agency when the virus hit. Took me right out of commission. That’s a vicious virus, it gave up all that publicity just to get a natural cures advocate to take Tamiflu!

In the way of explanation, we had Tamiflu stockpiled from the bird flu scare. And, I heard it worked great to help my nephew lick his flu.  So, even though I am taking Vitamin C and other natural supplements, I am downing 2 a day.

So, that’s what is going on here, and why I didn’t publish a blog post yesterday.

    I’m so sorry you’re sick! That stinks! I posted this not to long ago: http://nourishedkitchen.com/colds-flus/. Interestingly, a July study found that elderberry bioflavonoids compared favorably to tamiflu in the treatment of the H1N1 strain. Also homemade chicken broth inhibits neutrophil migration – that is it lessens the severity of cold/flu symptoms.

    Jenny–I don’t know what I would do without my freezer chock full of stocks and soups I have made. They are getting me and my hubbie thru this! Thanks for your other advice, that is excellent info.

    Hi Kim, feel better soon! Do you make your own fermented dill pickles/sauerkraut? Get eating that stuff! I put lots of garlic cloves in my pickles, and they get fermented and take on the flavour of the dill pickles, so eating fermented garlic will help too. I actually made just a jar of fermented garlic cloves just for this winter to combat any colds or flus that come our way. I also made a jar of elderberry syrup with raw honey in hopes that it will help too. Also, lots of coconut oil!

    I agree with Christine–lots of coconut oil, raw garlic daily. Personally, I recommend a diet of at least 60% raw foods (including lotsa greens–raw or cooked) as well as fermented cod liver oil (for the vitamin D, esp.) and NEVER any processed foods (esp. sweets) except on rare occasions.

    That keeps my family in good health–mild symptoms once in a while but nothing more.

    Feel better. If your stomach is upset you use ginger tea–that should make sure you keep down the other broths and such! And stay warm.

    Thanks, I will go have a pickle with my chicken stock! And, you’ll be happy to know Keith served me spinach with TONS of barely cooked garlic last night.

    He is also taking care of my Olive Oyl experiment while I am banished from the kitchen. The only thing I worry about it did some of my coughing near the curing olives contaminate them in any way? Just wondering what you experienced fermenters think about that?!

    Lots of vitamin D! Cod liver oil, lard, a good supplement if necessary.

    We just survived a nasty bout of the swine flu and with eight people in this house, we have tried everything!
    Occicilium (sp?) at flu onset
    Elderberry syrup (Sambucus) x3 per day
    Bryonia homeopathic tablets every 4 hours
    Daily Vit. D3 2000 iu

    homeopathic cough syrup for cough
    Advil for high fever at night to help kids sleep

    and of course NO SUGAR or refined foods at all, and lots of raw milk and chicken soup and as much water as possible.

    time is the best healer in this case along with plenty of REST!

    I agree with Barb with a couple exceptions. I had this recently and my physician put me on 50,000 units of D3 for 5 days. It worked like a charm. I had fever of up to 102.8 but did NOT take pain relievers. I let the fever work to fight it off. I had fever, aches and no energy but never got a cough, very few sneezes and sniffles, and nothing like a bad cold. Sipped on good bone broths. Good luck!

    Sometimes it seems that no matter how careful we are with what we eat and where we go, illness will strike. I take cod-liver, butter and coconut oil everyday, drink raw milk, eat only pastured meats and eggs, wild-caught fish and organic fruits and veggies, yet I think both my daughter and I caught H1N1, which morphed into something else: pneumonia for my daughter and bronchitis for me. We both had to take antibiotics, which worked like a charm. So, modern medicine definitely has a place in our modern world.

    My daughter is 10 and hasn’t been sick or missed a day of school, up until now, since she was 6 and I can’t remember that last time I had an illness, up until now, that kept me in bed for 2 days.

    I confidently attribute our good health to the WAPF way of eating. Illness is not the norm for us. But, unless you never leave your home you will be exposed to viruses Healthy eating should keep most of those viruses away or shorten their duration.

    Sorry it took me so long to get over here since your email – kids around and about until an hour ago. I am sure I don’t have anything to add that the very knowledgeable people above me haven’t already said! I don’t even know half that stuff, to be honest.     Here is another idea sent to me (by email) by Stan, Author of Tender Grass Fed Meats cookbook:

    I want to recommend a food based remedy that has really helped people who’ve had the swine flu get rid of that last cough.

    Mix 1/4 teaspoon organic turmeric with one teaspoon organic raw honey . Take 3 times a day. Chances are the first time you take it will make a big difference. This has worked for a lot of people, including a lady with immune problems who had a cough so bad she could not sleep for two days and actually pulled a muscle in her neck. First time she took it, cough almost totally gone. Its based on an old Ayurvedic formula. It is crucial that you use only organic ingredients.

    Sorry to hear that you were hit by the swine flu.

    All three of us were hit by it a few weeks back, but we were able to clobber that nasty virus into submission with natural remedies. By the end of the first day, the only symptom we had left was being tired, which lasted a few days. This is how we did it.

    1. We each took a 50,000 mg pill of vitamin D3 with probiotics, as recommended by Dr. Mayer Eisenstein.

    2. We sipped lots of Quadruple Healing Broth. The recipe is on page 52-53 of my book, Tender Grassfed Meat, available here: http://www.grasslandbeef.com/Detail.bok?no=1078.

    This recipe combines chicken broth with several vegetables used by traditional peoples to fight off infections. If I were you , I would follow these steps I am giving you. In particular, I would sip hot homemade broth all day until I was completely well. The quadruple healing broth is very effective. Making a good homemade broth tales some time, but it should really pay off.

    3. One of us had a problem with constant vomiting. We cured this immediately with a traditional cure based on freshly made raw onion juice.

    4. We continued this on day 2 and Day 3. Flu cured.

    Dr. Eisenstein is a true hippocratic physician who is opposed to vaccines and uses supplements to cure whenever possible. He sells the brand of D3 we used. We have used it on several occasions. It has always worked well, with no side effects.

    Now I want to tell you how to treat your flu. Boil water. Put a black tea bag into a big cup. add a small spoon of honey. squeeze a quarter fresh lemon in. Scrape in some fresh ginger (go buy this if you don’t have it). Put in a shot of bourbon, a shot of cayenne, as much as you can stand. pour boiling water over all. You get vitamin c from th e cayenne as well as the lemon, you get basic nourishment from the honey, you get trace minerals and stuff to clear your head from the fresh ginger, you get to feeling good from the whiskey and the tea. drink it four or five times a day.

    A few of the difficulties involved in the use of probiotices include gas, bloating, and digestive complaints. The increase in the growth of microorganisms, especially in the digestive tract, and the activity associated with them can be blamed for the increase in gas.
