A Green Margarita! Organic That Is!

Islamorada Bungalow Margaritas

Islamorada Bungalow Margaritas

I am so thrilled! I found a way to go green with my favorite mixed drink, margarita. When you decide to pursue a healthy lifestyle through changing your diet, it is easy to feel guilty when you are on vacation and want to relax your standards.

I rarely drink hard liquor, but the one drink I do like to enjoy at the beach is a margarita, on the rocks, with salt. This trip to the beach, I came across an organic margarita mix, and was so psyched! I also used celtic sea salt for the rim, and an organic lemon for wetting the rim.

Mod Mix is a woman owned company, and I think it is wonderful that they are bringing organics into the realm of cocktails. At one restaurant beach bar, I was horrified when I saw HFCS on the ingredients list for their margarita mix (right there on the label, it disclosed that the same product sold  in Canada did not have HFCS, but glucose and fructose–interesting).

So, I will probably plan ahead next trip, and pack Mod Mix for the healthiest margarita. As long as I am indulging, might as well go Green!

Here is a link to their marketing sheet with a description and ingredients list for all their drink mixes:

Modern Organic Drinks

Here is my Margarita Recipe:

Islamorada Bungalow Margarita

For each drink:

3 jiggers of Mod Mix Citrus Margarita

2 jiggers Triple Sec

1 jigger of Tequila (ask for a good quality, traditional formula)

one  cup ice

1 organic lemon or lime

celtic sea salt

For frozen margarita–Pour 1 TBL of salt on salad plate. Cut lemon or lime in half, and rub the rims of your glasses to moisten. Roll glass rims in salt and set aside. Add first four ingredients in the blender (double or triple the amount for two or three drinks).  Blend until slushee consistency. Pour into glasses. Slice lemon or lime and cut a gash halfway through the slice. Garnish glass with slice. Serve with cheese and crackers and leftover salmon salad as a spread for crackers.

We are enjoying this margarita on the back deck of Islamorada Bungalow, our beach rental in Ocean City, Maryland. The super wide deck overlooks a 30 foot boat dock, jetski lift and a 50 foot wide canal. Rent this cute bungalow and you can bring your own boat or jetski!

For more information on beach rentals, see our website, Awesome Beach Vacations. We have very few openings left for this summer and fall, and have discounted several weeks to rent them quick, so check it out!

I always feel guilty too, but you have to live a little! The nice thing about living a healthy lifestyle is that we can tolerate nasty things like HFCS once in a while. In fact, trying too hard to avoid unhealthy ingredients and toxic chemicals can sometimes be so stressful that it defeats the purpose which is why it’s great to loosen up once in a while, especially on vacation.

It’s great that more options for organic cheat foods are becoming available. However, some people make the mistake of thinking that these foods and drinks can be a regular part of their diet. I can’t even count how many times my wife has exclaimed “but it’s organic …” :)

Thanks for the great scoop, Kimberly! I also have found some more natural martini mixers here in town (I’ll have to look there for the margarita mixer). The only ingredients are 100% juices, cane sugar and filtered water – and they’re soooo good. Like Vin said, though, it’s a treat for once in a while.

Yes, Vin, when I am back home, the margaritas will drop out of my diet. I feel that it is a rare treat and not an everyday indulgence.

Kelly–last night we went to a restaurant, which served margaritas made from real lime juice. It was nice to know not all establishments rely on pre-made mixes with HFCS and other nasty ingredients.

Well, to soon to say if it’s good, but at least it’s well designed.
I mean I thought I would be blocked after adding some interests, but the site helps you to add more.

Hi, I’ve been thinking of setting up especially internet. However, not notable with techie factors. Is it challenging to create a world wide web? Would I need to get to invest time learning programming and coding?

Perfect margarita is made possible by using the best frozen drink maker in town. But your thoughts speaks loudly here. Superbly organic: refreshing.
