International Nutrition Conference Features  Keynote Address on the Raw Milk Revolution

The Awards Banquet at Wise Traditions 2009 took place Saturday night, November 14, 2009. The menu was sourced from conference sponsors, exhibitors, and local farms. All the recipes for the conference are being made available, for the first time, on the Weston A. Price website under Conference menus.

So, even if you weren’t able to join us, you can treat your family to some of the healthy offerings served up at Wise Traditions. Cathy Raymond, conference organizer, did an amazing job of coordinating the food. Here is the recipe for the out of this world key lime pie that was the highlight of Saturday night’s meal.

The conference this year is truly international. We had participants all the way from Pakistan a 33 hour plane trip! Also, attendees flew in from Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Queensland, Australia, United Kingdom, Italy and Canada, and of course, most of the U.S. states sent delegates, who came in by plane, train and automobile.

Awards Presented to Members, Leaders of Local Foods Movement

Sally Fallon Morell, President of the Weston A. Price Foundation, recognized 6 people for the membership award, 4 of whom had recruited 15 members (WOW) each to win a free conference registration! She challenged the rest of us to each recruit one new member in the new year. Due to our growing membership we have not been hurt by the recession, as has been the case with many other non-profits.

Then, Sally awarded the following folks, Activist Awards, for the work they are doing to advance the mission of the Foundation:

John and Jessica Moody—Real Food Activists
Gene’ Walls—Legal Defense Fund
Amanda Love—Real Food Activist
Peggy Beals—Raw Milk Safe Handling booklet
Kristin Canty— Documentary Filmmaker
Stephanie Rivers—School System Activitism
Kimberly Hartke—Publicity
Katherine Russell—posthumously won for her cowshare advocacy and raw milk activism

Next, Dr. Ted Beals, was honored with an Integrity in Science Award. Beals is an M.D. and Pathologist who has been a key witness before the California State Legislature and the Michael Schmidt raw milk trial in Canada. As the former head of a Lab that tested for pathogens, his scientific knowledge of the field has been a godsend to raw dairy proponents.

Misty Frank and Liz Pitfield surprised Foundation President, Sally Fallon Morell with a 10th anniversary commemorative book, containing letters from those individuals and families grateful to have been touched by Sally’s tireless work to promote the research of Dr. Weston A. Price.

Founding board member, Tom Cowan, M.D., then made a few remarks about this remarkable woman. To paraphrase, his remarks:

Sally is a rare person, the kind you only meet a few times in a lifetime. Sally has revolutionized, single-handedly, the way America eats. She has taken a culture bent on self destruction, and has been the catalyst to turn that around. All we have is the land. That is all we have. Sally is an untrained scientist, untrained medical person, not a soil scientist, yet she has accomplished so much. Animals are the only thing that can regenerate the soil. Fifteen years ago, in the food movement, vegetarians were on the vanguard. Patronizing the biodynamic farms were vegans that wouldn’t eat meat. But Sally came along and saved the farms. She has saved the farms and saved the soil by teaching people they must eat the meat that came from these farms. She has saved untold acres of soil with her cookbook, Nourishing Traditions.

Please see my related post for the evenings pinnacle, a keynote address by David Gumpert, award winning author. David spoke of his research into the minds of dairy regulators for his newest book, Raw Milk Revolution–The Emerging Battle Over America’s Food Rights.
