How to Meet Other Health Minded Singles

Keith and I married later in life. We were both unmarried until 45, and 40, respectively. We know what it is like to have a full exciting, independent life. And, how frustrating it is not to have someone to share it with.

Today, life is half as challenging, because we live the ups and downs, together.

Neither of us were exactly living health conscious lives, although we tried. It’s just that the advice we were following was not grounded in the truth. We tried to do what the government suggested, cut back on fats, eat lots of carbs. I drank diet sodas thinking they were healthier. Keith shunned sodas and desserts, but boy did he love his lite beer!

The friend who first introduced us to Weston A. Price was single. When she told us about this nutrition education group she was a part of, she also said, “I couldn’t marry anyone who didn’t understand the importance of good nutrition.” At the time, we were eating wild caught salmon, fresh veggies and feeling very excited that we were finally “eating right”. But, we both thought she was being a little unreasonable.

Six months later we joined Weston A. Price Foundation, ourselves. Now, I am very glad that my husband is excited and an equal participant in this new lifestyle. I think it would be harder to make direct farm purchasing and cooking from scratch a priority with a spouse who wasn’t “on board.”

So, I am excited to tell you about the new ways to connect online with like minded singles.

Online Singles Groups for Health Foodies

First, a new yahoo discussion group, Traditional Foodies:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TraditionalFoodies/

And, for those of you on Facebook, here is another place traditional foodies are gathering online:

Weston Price Singles

The best way to connect with others in these groups is to be an active participant. Share ideas, ask questions, post favorite links. Who knows what could happen!?

Meet Other Singles at Wise Traditions 2010

I just spoke to Sally (WAPF President) about my idea to provide a meeting place at the Wise Traditions conference for singles who attend. We both like the idea of labeling a few tables “singles only” tables in the dining area for meals. That way at any meal, singles who want to meet new people can sit with others at the designated area. The idea is that some meals they may want to eat with friends, but maybe other meals they would choose to sit at the singles table to see who shows up!

If this idea works, maybe we could do the same for bloggers. I spoke with a blogger last night who would love such an opportunity to connect with others in person.

What do you all think about this idea? Let us know and perhaps we can put that together.

Hello Kimberly…I am looking forward to meeting you this Saturday morning at the Meet up group for the special speaker – I live in Annapolis. I just joined the TraditionalFoodies single group listserve.

I love the idea of singles being able to get together at the next WAP conference. I might also suggest perhaps a single’s happy hour before the conference or during?

Also, I am a blogger and have actually contacted the WAPF office about having a workshop wherein the panel is bloggers and people can ask questions (how did you get started, etc.). If a workshop can’t happen, I would definitely love to be able to know who was who in the blogging world.

I can see a lot of the above happening via receptions or happy hours. I will talk to you more about this on Saturday.

What a WONDERFUL idea!! I’ve actually been saying to myself for a while now that I wish I could find a way to meet men who don’t cringe when they hear me talk about the fact that I’m pursuing a master’s in nutrition, and eat beef tallow, eggs, butter, homemade stock, lacto-fermented veggies, etc. It seems like most people would think I’m absolutely nuts. It’s like you said — I love living a nutritious, healthful, vibrant life, but it would be very nice to have someone to share it with! Especially because cooking can be such a fun and romantic thing to do together — provided you see eye-to-eye on the definition of “good food.”

Thanks again! I’m not sure I’ll be able to attend the conference this year, but I’ll be sure to check out those websites this weekend. :-)

    Hey, what about me?

Could we have a table at the 2010 annual for people focused on managing their heart disease through better nutrition?

Kimberly, thanks for sharing your story. I have the same feelings as Amy B. concerning how to tell someone how I choose to eat. There is no WP chapter where I live, and it would be neat to meet others in the same situation as me.
I like the singles happy hour and dinner table ideas.
