Farm Fest 2013 Stands Up for Freedom!
by Kimberly Hartke
Mark Baker and Kimberly Hartke will be featured guest speakers at an upcoming farm festival September 14, 2013, hosted by Seven Sons Farm in Roanoke, Indiana. See the festival announcement. The grass-based Seven Sons Farm is run by seven brothers and their families.
At one time, their land was a conventional farm, but in the late 1990’s the Hitzfield’s decided to cease growing crops and to return the land to pasture. Today, they raise chicken, eggs, beef, and pork for their discerning customers. The Hitzfield’s have spearheaded a farmer consortium, HonoredPrairie.com, which delivers various farmer’s products to club members in Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois.
Their farm festival is an annual event, drawing up to 700 people out to the farm for a relaxing day. Hay wagon rides, straw mazes, farm animal petting, and a smoked beef brisket lunch promise an exciting (and delicious!) day on the farm for the entire family.
Blaine Hitzfield, one of the farm owners expressed his hopes that the fun festival they have planned will raise charitable relief funds for the Mark Baker family. The Bakers Green Acres farm is currently embroiled in a legal battle with the state of Michigan. The Bakers, like the Hitzfields, raise pigs outdoors on pasture.
A state Invasive Species Order declaring their pigs illegal has turned the once prosperous Baker family finances upside down. Harmless domesticated pigs are now branded feral and illegal with the stroke of a pen. Mark Baker is a proud producer of humanely raised meats, of a special breed highly prized by chefs. In fact, many of his customers were fine dining restaurants! As of yet, no politicians have intervened or corrected the situation. Read Why Are We Supporting Mark Baker on the Seven Sons website.
The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund will be helping the Bakers by paying their attorney’s fees.

Seven Sons Farm believes in the pasture-based farming model, see their excellent Benefits of Eating Natural Free Range Meats page. It is great to see this successful family farm standing strong with Mark Baker and the thousands of other “at risk” farms in Michigan.
