Consumer Education is Key to Winning Battle for Clean Food Supply

by Kimberly Hartke

A little known disagreement amongst genetically modified food (GMO) opponents is over the issue of labeling. The Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund is giving a total airing of the squabble at their upcoming November 7, 2013 FundRAISER in Atlanta, which immediately proceeds the Wise Traditions International Conference (WiseTraditions.org). Two food heavyweights, Dr. Joseph Mercola, and the “Doctor of Farm Ecology” Joel Salatin will enter the ring and fight a battle of words, sure to educate, entertain and stimulate more conversation.

What you should know about GMOs, is that these food products have an excessive amount of deadly pesticides on them. The plants have been modified to tolerate the toxins, but animals and humans have not been ‘modified’ in the same way! So, are they really safe? There is mounting evidence that safety concerns have been swept under the rug, while permissions for more and more genetic modification keep getting rammed through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) approval process. See Institute for Responsible Technology website to learn more.

Debate Question: Should the Federal Government Mandate GMO Labeling?

This debate is all in good natured fun, but this is a very serious issue, and one that has consumer knowledge at its crux. In Europe, where GMOs need to be labeled, there has been a steep decline in consumer acceptance of the GMO products, and manufacturers have stopped using GMO ingredients. FTCLDF hopes to increase consumer awareness on this issue as a result of this GREAT GMO Debate!

Yours truly will be the Emcee for the event, which includes dinner, dancing and brief speeches from a number of other notables in the nutrition and eco-farming community.

The next morning, the world’s leading alternative health and wellness event, Wise Traditions International conference begins, so plan your trip to come a day early for the BIG EVENT! For those of you who want to learn more about farming without chemicals and GMOs, consider coming to Atlanta even earlier for a full day workshop with Joel Salatin, called Polyface YOU!
